Hellohello! My name is Cassandra Ignacio, but most of you know me as Cassie! I am the ACE Peer Mentor for the Pre-business cluster #19. I team teach with Andrea and we have twelve students. The majority of our cluster are residents of Hawaii and graduated from different high schools. There are a few from the mainland ranging from the west coast to the east coast! As you can imagine, with that much diversity, every class is always interesting. Each student is full of personality that keeps the class memorable. I look forward to seeing them each week and see how much they’ve gotten used to college life. I love hearing their stories about school and what they’ve observed about their professors. It’s like re-living my freshman year all over again. It’s very entertaining to see college life through their eyes. I’ve become so jaded by things that I forget why I was so amazed when I first entered college. I’m glad that they are there to remind me and make me more appreciative that I’m in college.

Michelle, Lance, & Charlotte!

Michelle, Lance, & Charlotte!

I won’t ever forget the first day that I met them. It was an eventful one. My hope was to allow them to realize that this class can be fun and with an even bigger hope allow them to realize that college is an experience not a duty. So in order for them to have this revelation, I thought that I would be as goofy and laid-back as possible. Maybe they would think, “hey, she’s not an angry uptight college student, I can be that way too!” Or something to that affect. We played introductory BINGO game. One of the questions, that we put on our BINGO game was “If you had the unlimited means, what would buy?” I responded with, “a country.” Thinking I would get a laugh out of it. Instead, I got bemused stares from my students…too much weird for the first day, I guess. Not only that, but one of our students had put a wrapped up chewed piece of gum, in Andrea’s hand! His excuse was that he could not find a trash can and did not want to hold it himself! I will never forget the first day! Since then, the students of cluster #19 are always willing to speak up! Whether it’s a sarcastic joke or a helpful comment, it’s heard!

Mocha Latte!

Mocha Latte!

Anywho, a little about myself…I am addicted to my t-mobile sidekick! I am always texting. I can honestly call it my sidekick. I would go crazy without it! I keep my schedule, due dates, and I even write a few poems in my sidekick…as odd as it sounds. When inspiration comes to me, I don’t ignore it! During the week, I love to study at Glazer’s Coffee in Puck’s Alley. It has a great atmosphere for studying and they make the prettiest lattes I’ve ever seen! If you’re craving something sweet you should try the mocha lattes! Yum-yum ^-^ If you’re brave and are a caffeine addict like me, you should have an espresso con panna. Just a little, f.y.i, all these pictures…taken with my sidekick.

Have a great week!

Hello ALL!!

My my my, It has been a roller coaster of semester hasn’t it?! Only a few more weeks of school and then CHRISTMAS BREAK! This is Caitlin by the way, and I bet no one is looking foreward to break as much as I am (my fiance is coming home from Iraq YAY!) A little about me for those who dont already know, I am loud proud and Mexican. I’m a total nerd because I absolutely LOVE science, especially cellular molecular biology. I want to be a pediatric infectious disease specialist after I graduate from John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). I love my new game Spore, for my Ipod!! I  also dance ballet, I’m not very good,  but I try! I never want to grow up, and I would die without technology!  As a peer mentor I had a lot of fun with my cluster and this semester went by really fast! But enough about me, lets talk about Cluster 28!

We are a Pre-Health and Science cluster with lots of diversity! We’ve got it all! Lawyers, Finance majors, Marine Biologists, Aquabiologists, Physical Therapists, Pre Med, and Police officers, and some unknowns, but hey that’s what college is for! We are also all from different places, we have quite a few out-of-staters, coming all the way from New York City, Seattle and Colorado Springs!  My cluster is super friendly and driven. They have Bio 171 + 171L, Chem 161+161L and CAS 110 together, trust me that is enough!

As challenging as the pre-reqs can be we just couldn’t get enough and invited Prof. Jarett the Chemistry professor to lunch. At first everyone was a little shy, but it only took some pizza to break the ice and we all learned a lot about the beloved Prof who blows things up in class! (who doesn’t like a Prof like that?!) For our service learning we worked hard making pins togehter to spread breast and prostate cancer awareness. It was great! We bonded we made pins, we watched the worst movie England has ever produced and whats more important we did it all in the name of service!

Well, I had some photos, but it seems my camera’s wires have gone AWOL. So I leave you with the funniest ballet I have ever seen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! :)
See ya!

Hello everyone!  Guess what, guess what, guess what!…

…there are only 19* days of school left in the semester! (*well, not counting Finals)

I know, I know—shocking.  Congratulations on making it through eight consecutive weeks of no holidays!  Woohoo!

Anyway, my name is Mari and I’m the peer mentor of awesome cluster 002, General Education.  Some background, just so you know who’s writing this, because (*information literacy*) it’s always nice to know the source: I’m a third-year Political Science major with aspirations of going to graduate school and then saving the world (of course).  I like to read and love to write.  I have an insatiable need to travel.  Oh, and I am hopelessly addicted to green tea ice cream from Dave’s Ice Cream Parlor.  If you haven’t tried it, I’m sorry but you haven’t lived.

Anyway!

My cluster is cool, rad, and all that fun stuff.  We Cluster Twoers come from all over!  And by all over I mean all over Hawaii, from Kona to Kaneohe, with two peaceful ambassadors from San Diego as well.  My students are taking HIST 152 and MATH 100 together, and yes those classes are semi-sorta-sometimes-awesome too, thanks for asking.  In case some of you readers are visual learners, here are some pictures of my students hard at work at our Service Learning Project!

Cluster 002 understands the importance of the blog-revolution.  We are down with that.  We realize how powerful the written and self-published word can be.  So we approached this blog with much seriousness and prudent thought: if we had one opportunity to say everything that needs to be said, to do something amazing and magical, what would we do?  Well this is what we did.  Below is a compilation of fifteen hard earned gems of thought, applicable to anyone and everyone.  Partake in the wisdom of Max, Terrance, Carli, Kalani, Morgan, Jordan, Jarissa, Maile, Clinton, and Jeff! (Uh…we missed you in class today Casie! L)

Hey!  Did you know that currently, as I write this (and possibly as you read this), the H-5 (Hawaii Helping the Hungry Have Hope) is sponsoring a walk around the island of Oahu?  WALK THE TALK is a nineteen day (Nov. 12-21) challenge.  Its goal is two-part: (1) to fundraise to convert former tour buses into temporary overnight shelters for the homeless, and (2) to raise awareness of the issues facing the homeless in Hawaii.  Visit the walk’s website at http://www.walkthetalkhawaii.org/ for more information about the project, or to register to walk!

HEY!  One last thing…before I go…before Cluster 002’s one week of fame is up…did you know the Spring 2009 Schedule of Classes is up online?  If not, check it out at http://myuh.hawaii.edu/uhdad/avail.classes?i=MAN&t=200930.  Don’t know your registration time?  Find it here: http://myuhinfo.hawaii.edu/object/uhmtimetable.html!

This concludes the blog of Cluster 002.  Hope you enjoyed it! J

Hey everyone!  It’s mid-semester and there’s no doubt that were feeling the stress of midterms and the impending stress of the end of the semester.  Though some of the reasons may be part of our own doing (procrastinating to do a paper an hour before it’s due, etc.), either way most of us will feel stress sometime in our lives.  We’re cluster 29 (Pre-health) and for our blog we’ve got a few stress-busting tips for all of you.

BERT:

·          play my guitar.  I find it relaxing and a way to stimulate my creativity.  I use music to reground myself when I can’t look to others for support.  Music is always there for me and is a captive listener.

LEI:

My stress reliever: SURFING!!!

NADIA:

1.)    SLEEP! (It rejuvanates your body, mind, and skin!)

2.) Exercise. (It makes you feel great and look great!)

3.) Shopping with a friend. (It’s not ”retail therapy” for nothing! And
the famous do it too, lol.)

CARA:

 - Enroll in a martial arts class. Any type of exercise will help get
the stressful energy out and after a nice cool shower you will
definately feel refreshed and relaxed. (see naginata picture)

 - Take a nice, relaxing cat nap. For headaches caused by stress, a
short cat nap always makes me feel better. About 30 minutes is good,
any longer and you may feel too tired to go back to doing work.

 - Find a fun hobby. Any hobby that relaxes you. I personally crochet
and sing to relax. Singing helps me release stressful energy and
crocheting keeps my mind concentrated on my fingers and not on whatever
was stressing me. Listening to music also helps too.

KACIE:

-         stretching (it’s a proactive way to relieve stress and physically improve flexibility

-         breathing properly (especially important in martial arts and yoga)

o       breathing consists of extended inhalations through the nasal cavities, and an extended exhalation through the mouth.

o       A lengthy exhalation is emphasized to ensure the full release of carbon dioxide from the body.  Remember, that this form of breathing does not only apply to one on the yoga mat, it can also apply to you, say in between study sessions or classes, as a way to help relieve stress.

CELESTE:

-          Look at interesting blogs or videos online (there are billions of them!!!)

My name is Kuuleialohaonalani Salzer,

I am really bless to have a awesome cluster. Students in my cluster are all from Hawaii, but they all reign from a different place in Hawaii. I have two students from Hawaii Island. Two students are from Maui. My other students are from different places in Oahu from the leeward side to town. All my students have Hawaiian Studies, FamR and Theater class together. We had luch with their FamR professior who has a funny personalilty. He was really nice and gave my cluster hint about the mid-term. my cluster was happy to take Professior Claufield.

The best football game I ever went to would have to be the Washington game  last year. I didn’t mind the rain I was sitting with my friends and we were cheering with people we didn’t even know. It was such a tight game that we thought that UH might lose, but we won! It was the most exciting game of my life.

 MAUI NO KA OI

My name is Lorrance Majewski.  You can pronounce it Mah-Jew-Skee, but since it’s Polish, the correct way to say it is Mah-Yev-Skee.  Either way is fine by me. :)   I love video games, but I don’t get to play them anymore, so I just keep up with all the news.  I did early voting and it was fast and easy.  I hope that everyone voted for their candidates of choice!

I’m the peer mentor from cluster #31!  They drive me crazy sometimes, but it’s been 100% fun times for all of us!  I have students all from high schools in Hawaii: Roosevelt, Sacred Hearts, St. Louis, and Hawaii Preparatory Academy among others.  The majority of my class commutes but I’m trying to emphasize how different of an experience dorming or living close to campus would be.  Although. with the financial literacy lesson we just had, it may not be best budget-friendly action. :(   Being a pre-health cluster, my students take biology and chemistry together.  Some of the other classes they’re taking, but are not limited to only, include psychology and women’s studies.  Fun fact:  Every class is awkward fun time in Saunders 244! B-)

For take your professor to lunch day, we took Leilani to lunch!  It was a lot of fun and every loved her.  Those who already met and talked with her were surprised to find out brand new things about her, and the rest that were really meeting her personally for the first time found her to be energizing and awesome!  Many found her insights into college and life to be heartfelt, helpful, and great.  I hope all of them find time to meet with her again and again!

Lastl,y I wanted to get a picture of my cluster, but I guess I’ll try to get that another week.  Here’s some random pictures in the meantime.
