Last fall semester, our peer mentors watched a presentation by Dr. Randy Pausch entitled ”Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.”
The speech was part of a series Carnegie Mellon previously called “The Last Lecture,” where professors were asked to think about what matters to them most and give a hypothetical final talk. Only in Dr. Pausch’s case, he was really was facing death — and he talked about what his childhood dreams had taught him about life.
Dr. Pausch passed away today, July 25th, after a fight with pancreatic cancer. He was 47 years old and is survived by his wife and three young children.
Dr. Pausch taught us so many important lessons:
“The brick walls are not there to keep us out, the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something… Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the OTHER people.”
“It’s not about how to achieve your dreams, it’s about how to lead your life… If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself, the dreams will come to you.”
I appreciate Megan, a former ACE peer mentor, for notifying me of Dr. Pausch’s passing. Dr. Pausch’s “last lecture” had a lasting impression on all of us. May we remember this remarkable man, lead good lives, and achieve our dreams.

Hurray! Our program finally has a new website! We’ve included pictures, experiences, and other fun things to the site. See pics, meet a mentor, and join our facebook group! I am so grateful for our wonderful designer, Aaron, for creating this fun-tastic site!

We want to recognize everyone on a successful 2007-2008 school year! Some highlights:
- Over 150 students participated in the International Coastal Clean-up at Ala Moana Beach Park. Together, we helped clean our beautiful beaches and picked up over 6,200 cigarettes, 1,700 food containers, and thousands of other harmful debris.
- Over 230 students, mentors, and faculty attended our 2007 ACE Bash! ACE Peer Mentors fundraised for this wonderful event. This year’s theme, “Viva ACE” was inspired by our love for Las Vegas!
- Mahalo for giving back to the community through your service learning projects. This year, ACE students supported community centers, botanical gardens, hospitals, long-term care facilities, fishponds, museums, and other local organizations. Together, we painted classrooms, cleaned beaches, educated children, walked dogs, cultivated taro, distributed water, collected data, spent valuable time with others… and learned to give of ourselves!
Cheers to another exciting school year!
